Tacca chantrieri "Bat Plant"

Wandering through the Royal Botanic Gardens enjoying a beautiful Sydney autumn day I came across, hidden in amongst a group of shrubs, one of the weirdest and collectable plants you can get. Highly prized by gardeners the Bat Plant or Tacca chantrieri is prized for it's unusual purple/black flowers.
It is a relative of the Yam and can be grown outdoors in the tropics and sub tropics.

More examples of Terrariums. These little guys are becoming very popular and with Christmas coming up we have lots of orders from people who are wanting a gift for that person who has everything. Tillandsia Air Plants in a Large Light Bulb vessel. These are perfect for those folks who kill everything. Air Plants litteraly live off the air, drawing nutrients from the air rather than the soil. The only maintenance required is a light spraying with water once a week or so. The light bulb vases are imported from a well know French design house and look stunning as terrariums.

A specially commisioned Terrarium from our Sydney Florist

Take a look at this Terrarium commisioned by a Botanics Florist Sydney customer. A glass fish bowl planted with Elkhorn Fern, Maidenhair Fern, Various species of Moss and with Lychen covered branches. Once planted and sprayed with water, little mushrooms sprung from the branches. This is going to our customers home but it would make a perfect alternative to a Sydney flower delivery.

Great Housewarming Gift from our Sydney Florist

Do you have a friend or family member who has moved into a new home and your looking for a great Housewarming gift idea? Well look no further than Botanics Florist Sydney! Take a look at our Goodluck Jade Plant. This is a tough hardy plant that even the brownest fingers will have trouble killing but what makes it a great housewarming gift is it reputation in Chinese and Fung Shui cultures as being a plant that attracts goodluck to its owners. It's often called "The Money Tree" but its botanical name is Crassula ovata. It is a member of the succulent family which makes it very hardy in either an ourdoor situation or an indoor situation.
If planted in the ground it will reach approx 1m in height but will happily grow in a pot indefinately and will even tolerate being pot bound. In spring it gets covered in small star shaped light pink flowers but it is the glossy green fleshy foliage that is its main attraction. It also makes a fantastic Bonsai!
Such a versatile plant is why we say it makes a fantastic Housewarming plant.

Tulips- one of the top selling flowers in Sydney

Tulip season is in full swing and are some of the best flowers sydney has on offer at the moment. Again this year our "vase of Tulips" flower arrangement is one of our top sellers for online Sydney flower delivery. It makes a simple stylish gift perfect for any occasion. Like most of our Sydney flower arrangements, it comes in a glass vase that the recipient gets to keep long after the flowers have passed, a constant reminder of your thoughtful gesture.
Although people associate Tulips with Holland and The Netherlands, Tulips originate from mountainous regions of a large area of Asia, Europe and Africa. They are Spring flowering Bulbs which need cold winter dormancy conditions, modern cultivation methods enable them to be available to us for a large part of the year.
One comment or question we sometimes are asked is "why are my Tulips flopping?". This is natural, unlike other cut flowers, Tulip stems keep growing even after they have been cut. Eventually the stems can get so long that the flower head becomes too heavy and the flower "flops". Don't see this as a fault but rather a part of the beauty of these flowers.
If you creative, you can put this to good use. Take a look at the picture above, we are lucky enough to have a vase that is perfect for taking advantage of the Tulips features. We have used only 10 stems in this example, but imagine how dramatic it would look with 20 or even 30 stems flowing out from the vase mouth!
Enjoy these beautiful long lasting flowers, and if they eventually "flop" then maybe rethink the vase or the way they are displayed and have fun with them.
