Plumeria Pudica commonly called Everlasting Love Frangipani because it flowera continualy throughout the year.
It is an evergreen Frangipani and grows smaller than the average variety. Will reach 2 to 3 metres depending on location.

Tacca chantrieri "Bat Plant"

Wandering through the Royal Botanic Gardens enjoying a beautiful Sydney autumn day I came across, hidden in amongst a group of shrubs, one of the weirdest and collectable plants you can get. Highly prized by gardeners the Bat Plant or Tacca chantrieri is prized for it's unusual purple/black flowers.
It is a relative of the Yam and can be grown outdoors in the tropics and sub tropics.

Summer in Sydney is Waterlily Season

Summer in Sydney means it is Waterlily time. Waterlilies are one of the most beautiful summer flowers you can get. Trick to having them last as long as possible is to keep your vase nice and full of water, right to the top if possible. Waterlilies grow in ponds and their flowers float on the water surface, their hollow stems are filled with the pond water right to the flower base. Having your vase full of water will replicate this and increase the vase life of your flowers. Changing the water daily will also help increase vase life.
I couldn't resist taking some home with me. Even the David Noonan Sculpture seems quite taken by them :-)

More Terrariums from our Sydney Florist, we don't only specialise in Sydney flower delivery

More examples of Terrariums. These little guys are becoming very popular and with Christmas coming up we have lots of orders from people who are wanting a gift for that person who has everything. Terrariums make a great gift for any occassion as an alternative to the traditional Sydney flower delivery

Tillandsia Air Plants in a Large Light Bulb vessel. These are perfect for those folks who kill everything. Air Plants litteraly live off the air, drawing nutrients from the air rather than the soil. The only maintenance required is a light spraying with water once a week or so. The light bulb vases are imported from a well know French design house and look stunning as terrariums.

Tillandsia Air Plants in Cookie Jar. We also are now planting these hardy little guys into Antique Chemist bottles. Stay tuned for picks.

You can also see examples of our latest terrariums at our Facebook page

The Sacred Lotus And Its Use In Our Sydney Flower Delivery..

It's Summertime again in Sydney and our Sydney Florist is stocking the beautiful Lotus Pods for use in our Sydney Flower Delivery!
The Lotus or Nelumbo Nucifera as it's botanically known is one of the most beautiful flowers in the world and origionates from tropical areas of Asia and Northern Australia. It is often confused with the Waterlilly flower (Nymphaea species) but they are not related.
The Lotus plant grows naturaly in the muddy bottom of stagnant ponds and muddy rivers. The leaves and later the flower stretch up out of the water, it is the symbolism of such a beautiful flower rising up out of filth without being stained which makes the Lotus flower sacred to Buddhists.
The Lotus is a very versatile plant and is used extensively in cooking. Almost every part of the plant is used in some way but it is the flower and seed pod which interests us at Botanics Florist Sydney. The flowers, whilst not long lasting, are exquisite and are best used in arrangements for events like weddings. The Lotus Pods last a long time and can be dried and add amazing texture and interest to an otherwise ordinary arrangement or bouquet.
Take a look, they are amazing plants, if you have a decent sized waterbowl at home you could try growing one.

Cymbidium Orchids- The king of all Orchids

Orchids are one of the most popular flowers Sydney has to offer and Cymbidium Orchids are amongst the most popular of the genus.
Cymbidium Orchids are one of the oldest cultivated Orchids in the world, there are records of them being cultivated in China 200 BC and were called "the King Of Orchids" by Confucius.
The flower stem on Cymbidium will last on the plants for approx 2 months and can last in a vase for almost as long.

Cymbidiums can be grown in all parts of Australia but in colder areas some protection from a green house is needed.
Cymbidiums will grow in the ground but will rarely ever flower, so they should be planted in pots in an Orchid Potting Mixture. This also allows you to move the plant around so that during the summer months you are able to give them some protection from any hot afternoon sun and then as the weather cools in Autumn you can bring them out into more sunlight to encourage flower bud development.
Fertilising should be done throughout the year to encourage leaf growth during the growing season (summer) and flowering during the flowering season ( winter). Use a slow release fertiliser every 3 months but from February onwards start feeding every week with Aquasol soluble fertiliser to encourage flowering in Winter.
Cymbidiums need regular watering, every second day during the warmer months but every day in temperatures over 30 degrees.
When your plant outgrows its current pot, you can either split it up and re pot it or simply re pot it into a larger pot. If you decide to split the plant you will usually lose a season or two of flowering.

Great Housewarming Gift from our Sydney Florist

Do you have a friend or family member who has moved into a new home and your looking for a great Housewarming gift idea? Well look no further than Botanics Florist Sydney! Take a look at our Goodluck Jade Plant. This is a tough hardy plant that even the brownest fingers will have trouble killing but what makes it a great housewarming gift is it reputation in Chinese and Fung Shui cultures as being a plant that attracts goodluck to its owners. It's often called "The Money Tree" but its botanical name is Crassula ovata. It is a member of the succulent family which makes it very hardy in either an ourdoor situation or an indoor situation.
If planted in the ground it will reach approx 1m in height but will happily grow in a pot indefinately and will even tolerate being pot bound. In spring it gets covered in small star shaped light pink flowers but it is the glossy green fleshy foliage that is its main attraction. It also makes a fantastic Bonsai!
Such a versatile plant is why we say it makes a fantastic Housewarming plant.

The Emotional Benefits Of Flowers

For thousands of years people have been cultivating flowers but for what benefit? Growing flowers is a costly & labour intensive exercise yet there is always a demand for this activity. Everyone loves receiving flowers, but now a scientific study in the United States has proven that flowers have a positive physiological effect on people of both genders emotions, sense of wellbeing and happiness.
In a study of over 400 people (as reported in the Journal of Evolutionary Psychology, 2005:3 104-113) various scenarios were carried out and the presence of flowers measured against other items and nothing at all.

In Study 1 flowers (a bouquet of roses, lillies and stock)were presented to 147 women. It was found that receiving the flowers always elicited the Duchenne or true smile. The response was significantly greater than any of the other stimuli tested, including fruit and sweet baskets and a large, multi-wicked burning candle. Perhaps the most significant finding in this study was that women who received the flowers reported more positive moods 3 days later. None of the other stimuli had this affect. This means that giving flowers to someone will not only give a significantly positive response immediately, positive benefits are still felt 3 days later!

In Study 2, 122 people (both Men & Women) entered an elevator and were given a free Gerbera flower, were given a free pen, or nothing (control). Giving the Gerbera flower had the most significantly positive response in both men and women - causing them to smile more, stand closer to the undercover experimenter and making them more likely to initiate conversation . In fact, people who were not part of the experiment were asking for free flowers too, once word got out that Gerberas were being handed out. This study shows that the positive effects of flowers are not just enjoyed by women but men also.

In Study 3, 91 people with the average age of 73 who had received flowers reported significantly more happiness and interest than those who didn't receive flowers. It appeared that the benefit was additive, with happiness increasing for those who received a second bunch of flowers. In addition, flower receivers reported an increase in episodic memory and were less likely to feel depressed.

It's unknown why exactly flowers have such a beneficial effect on peoples moods but the study offers a suggestion of the possibility that humans are "biologically primed" to associate flowers to happiness as well as flowers perfumes, pollens etc.

One last note from the researchers.... "In many years of studying emotions, we have never received hugs, kisses, thank you notes or photographs, not even for candy, doughnuts, decorated shirts or hats, gift certificates or direct monetary payments: the flowers are different"

This study is great reading not only for those who are looking at online Sydney flower delivery as a surprise for a loved one but also those clients who have corporate flowers delivered to their business place each week, proof that your corporate flowers are providing benefit to your customers and staff.

If you would like to read more of the study you can find it here http://www.human-nature.com/ep/articles/ep03104132.html

Tulips- one of the top selling flowers in Sydney

Tulip season is in full swing and are some of the best flowers sydney has on offer at the moment. Again this year our "vase of Tulips" flower arrangement is one of our top sellers for online Sydney flower delivery. It makes a simple stylish gift perfect for any occasion. Like most of our Sydney flower arrangements, it comes in a glass vase that the recipient gets to keep long after the flowers have passed, a constant reminder of your thoughtful gesture.
Although people associate Tulips with Holland and The Netherlands, Tulips originate from mountainous regions of a large area of Asia, Europe and Africa. They are Spring flowering Bulbs which need cold winter dormancy conditions, modern cultivation methods enable them to be available to us for a large part of the year.
One comment or question we sometimes are asked is "why are my Tulips flopping?". This is natural, unlike other cut flowers, Tulip stems keep growing even after they have been cut. Eventually the stems can get so long that the flower head becomes too heavy and the flower "flops". Don't see this as a fault but rather a part of the beauty of these flowers.
If you creative, you can put this to good use. Take a look at the picture above, we are lucky enough to have a vase that is perfect for taking advantage of the Tulips features. We have used only 10 stems in this example, but imagine how dramatic it would look with 20 or even 30 stems flowing out from the vase mouth!
Enjoy these beautiful long lasting flowers, and if they eventually "flop" then maybe rethink the vase or the way they are displayed and have fun with them.

The most magic mauve flowers Sydney has to offer

With the roses around so tightly formed, this bunch of flowers was easy to put together. Just add some texture with Lotus Pods, a few big leaves in a variety in sizes, and hey presto, there's a gorgeous bunch of flowers. For that little different touch, check out the blue butterfly.

Like it? Let me know. If you do, remember to ask for it when you order your next bunch of flowers.
